Grading Syllabus - Beginners

The syllabus for beginner to intermediate belts is outlined below, which includes the Kihon, Kata and Kumite each student is required to demonstrate in order to pass their grading. The Japanese terms are used throughout the syllabus, as they are in our classes, it would be useful for the student to learn them as early on as possible. 

10th to 9th Kyu (White to Orange Belt)

 

KIHON

 

From shizentai (ready stance), choku zuki - (single straight punch)

 

From heisoku dachi, mae geri (from .... stance, front kick) x 10

 

Step forward zenkutsu dachi – gedan barai (step forward into front stance, with a downward block)

 

Stepping 4 times each:

Forwards oi zuki chudan (chest hight, single straight punch),

Backwards age uke (rising block)

 

Forwards soto uke (outside block)

Backwards gedan barai (downward block)

 

From zenkutsu dachi, gyaku zuki (from front stance, reverse punch) x 10

 

KATA

 

Heian Shodan  to count

 

KUMITE

 

Gohon Kumite -jodan (5 step) to count

9th to 8th Kyu (Orange to Red Belt)

 

KIHON

 

Step forward zenkutsu dachi – gedan barai (step forward into front stance, with a downward block)

 

Stepping 4 times each:

Forwards oi zuki chudan (chest hight, single straight punch),

Backwards age uke (rising block)

 

Forwards soto uke (outside block)

Backwards shuto uke, kokutsu dachi (knife hand block, in back stance)

 

Forwards uchi uke (inside block)

Backwards gedan barai (downward block)

 

Forwards mae geri (front kick)

Forwards yoko geri keage, kiba dachi (side snap kick, in horse riding stance)

Forwards yoko geri kekomi, kiba dachi (side thrust kick, in horse riding stance)
